A 26 year old felon wanting to go back to college.?

Question:I'm 26 years old now, when I was 18 all I cared about was myself and what other people thought about me.
I hung with the wrong people and ended up getting in serious trouble.
I got convicted of 'Breaking & Entering' & 'Larceny, after B&E'.
Simply because I took some stolen comic books (Very childish, huh?) and gave my "friends" a ride to the storage unit they broke into.

I never had to do prison time but did serve 5 years probation and had to pay $10,000 in fines & restitution.

I was never in trouble before, or since.

I tried going back to college a couple years back, but I ended up not being able to handle college & work.

I KNOW I'm ready now.

But my question is, after I graduate from this community college will I be able to transfer to a public university?
My grades have always been way above average & I can afford to pay all of my tuition fees.

Am I chasing a dying dream or can I still turn my life around?

Thanks for your time.

:)

Dude, you're still young. Like what the first guy said, depending on what career you choose, you can definitely turn your life around. Also, if you had above average GPA, you can definitely go to university after college. Good luck.
Well you should think about what kind of career you are looking for. Some careers don't accept anybody with a felony record, while other careers recruit people straight out of prison. Look further into the carrer feild that you want to get into.
If your honest & work hard, I hope so. I wouldn't apply to Harvard or anything, but a local 4-year school. Sure, why not.

Good Luck, but stay away from the comics.

Also, you might want to see a lawyer to see if there is a way to remove it from your record. You were young, the crime was childish, commuted down to near nothing, & your turning your life around. A judge might be able/willing to help you out.
you can transfer to most any university after CC..
Check the law in your state first to find out if you are eligible for expungement since it was your first offense, it was a non-violent crime, and you've had no new convictions. Depending on the state, you may be able to expunge it.

I am a prosecuting attorney and we get expungement requests all the time. I only work with misdemeanors though, so I wouldn't know what to tell you about felonies. Also, expungement laws vary from state to state.

Also, if you are going to need student loans, you need to check with FAFSA to see if you'll qualify with that kind of conviction.

I wouldn't give up hope. There are lawyers out there who got through college and law school with serious convictions on their record. I know there has been at least one person with a murder conviction admitted to the bar in my state.
So it was you wasn't it. You are the one who took my priceless comic books. Do you have any idea how long it took me to find one like that?! huh?!
Go for it. A lot of people make mistakes when they're young, and any employer with half a brain knows that. It is not true that employers will not hire you if you have a record. But they will ask, and you will need to explain. With your explanation, you shouldn't have a problem. My niece is in a similar position, and thought she would never get a job in the health care field. Hospitals, Nursing homes, Nursing agencies, etc., ALWAYS do a background check because of the responsibility involved and the easy access to drugs. She just got her nursing license, and just got hired. When she went for her interview, she told them right up front about her felony, and what happened, and why. She still got the job. And she deserves it. If you are serious about turning your life around, so do you. I'd hire you. I think you'd appreciate the job more and work harder than someone who has always had it easy. Good luck.

PS--I take that back, not just a lot of people make mistakes when they're young--ALL people make mistakes when they're young--some just get caught.
Some of the state colleges will probably take you if your grades were good.
JUST REMEMBER THAT PRAY CAN ALWAYS OPEN DOORS FOR ANYONE WHO IS STRUGGLING IN LIFE . I BELIEVE THAT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GO BACK TO COLLEGE TO GET YOUR LIFE BACK ON TRACK YOU YOU CAN DO IT. THERE'S PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE IN THE SAME BOAT YOU ARE IN. I BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN DO IT. JUST KEEP YOUR HEAD UP & AND PRAY ON IT. I'M GALD THAT SOMEONE LIKE YOUR WANTS TO EXCEED IN LIFE THEN TO JUST STOP AND THINK THAT ITS NOTHING OUT THERE FOR YOU.
