Answers:
No he didn't make it up.
It is an old Chinese proverb.
i dont know but thats very clever thinking!
I watched that last night. Nice sentiment though. Gawd, didn't they go on about their sex lives though abit too graphically. I reckon they should have got rid of the cameras for three days and given Pete privacy to really hammer his frustrations out.
its a true saying

yesterday is history
tomorrow is still to come
today is the present thats why we call it a gift
I didn't see the programme but it's a good way to look at life.
It means every morning that you wake up you receive a gift of that day. I like gifts and I like the idea that tomorrow is a mystery, it would be very boring if you knew what was going to happen every day of your life.
I think the reference to today being a "gift" is meaning that every living day is a gift or a blessing, we all know that yesterday or befor is history, of course tomorrow is a mystery as it has not happened yet and no-one can see the future, as for where it originates, i dont know but i definately think that the gift being another day of life is the right meaning, hence a present of life.
It's an oft-quoted saying and were you to search the Internet, you'd see it's sourced to a lot of folks, from Joan Rivers to Babatunde Olatunji.

The full quote is "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present."
Eleanor Roosevelt said
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present."
When it started circulating via email, someone felt the need to explain the subtle pun and added "that's why they call it a gift."
