What is the meaning behind "no good deed goes unpunished"? who said it first?

Answers:
'No good deed goes unpunished' is a remark attributed to Oscar Wilde, who lived from 1854-1900

Good deeds don't always result in a good response/result.

Oscar had a skewed view of the world, but he was popular and remembered because his observations where funny and apparently pretty right on!

Keeping in mind we usually complain when things go wrong and don't remember how often things go right. It's part of our genetic survival response to stress.

Having said that, I say this.A LOT!
Actually this is disputed. Many people attribute this to Dorothy Parker, the Wilde attribution seems newer. Other candidates have also been mentioned.
