About becoming an EMT?

I am thinking about taking a 1000$ dollar EMT course and then taking the tests that are required to be qualified for the commission. It seems quite simple to become one, and I was in recent times wondering, if there is more to it, how the market is for this kind of profession, and maybe some details on what the job would be like?

I hold NEVER heard about any kind as you would expect that is that expensive. Our local volunteer fire dept. offers FREE CPR and EMT courses. Why pay so much?! Just contact your local Firestation.
