Proper way to respond when recieving a call...?
Question:When someone calls you and asks to speak with (your name here). Do you respond with, "This is she, or this is her. Or maybe "speaking". This has always baffled me. I usually say this is her but I do not think that is correct.
Answers:
I don't like the way "Speaking" sounds, so I say either "This is she," or "This is Lea." Incidentally, both correct grammar.
"This is her" is not correct grammar. "This is she" or "speaking" are both fine.
This is she or speaking are the correct way to answer.
However more often than not I say she isn't at home at the moment because more often than not somebody calling and asking to speak to someone is always trying to sell something and I'm not interested.
This is she is correct.
The official way to respond is this:
CALLER--Hello, is Katie there?
YOU-This is she.
However, when I repond I usually follow this format:
CALLER--Hello, is Justin there?
ME--That would be me.
I know, that was stupid, but I think it's funny!
I respond 'speaking', but you can say 'this is she' also. 'This is her' doesn't sound right-and as the other person said, it's not correct grammer!
"This is she" is correct, I say "speaking"
the first words that come out of my mouth are? "may I ask who is calling?"
"This is she" is formal and correct if a bit stiff.
"Yes, speaking" is clear and bit more friendly.
I answer the phone by giving my phone number (no Hello at that stage).
That prevents giving any details to a wrong number call.
Then things ususally go like this:
Could I speak to Mr Aaaa Bbbb please? or Is that Mr Aaaa Bbbb?
Aaaa Bbbb speaking. Hello, or Good Morning.
If you say 'This is ... ', it should be 'This is he (or she or your name) speaking.'
This is (s)he.
Well, to tell you the truth, if I thinks its a telemarketer or some political party, I say "Who's calling please?" If I know the company, I'll say "Speaking"
